A referee at a high level of Chicago soccer, handling both local and national games from 1919 to 1939. The highlight of Johnston’s refereeing career came in 1931, when he handled the second leg of the U.S. Open Cup final between Chicago Bricklayers and the Fall River Marksmen. For many years, he was a soccer correspondent for the Chicago Tribune. Inducted in 1952.
