National Soccer Hall of Fame Statement on the Passing of Franz Beckenbauer

Franz Beckenbauer was more than a world-class player and a National Soccer Hall of Fame member. He was a sports icon who left an indelible mark on American soccer.

His contributions to the North American Soccer League with the New York Cosmos brought unprecedented attention to soccer in the United States. The astounding play and amazing star power of those Cosmos teams seeded the growth of the game in our country and inspired generations of players.

We are grateful he shared his gifts with fans in our country. Our thoughts are with the Beckenbauer family during this difficult time.
